My third site

I gathered my 2 samples at this site during the same conditions as site 1 and 2.
My hypothesis was correct that this site was the most polluted due to the stormwater drain.
(site 3- stormwater drain)

My second site

I gathered samples from site 2 twice in the same conditions as site 1 and 3.

This site looked the least polluted.  (site 2)

My first site

The first time I gathered samples from site 1 was during light rain and high tide. The second time was during a clear day and low tide.

Site 1 (near the bridge/ Steel Park)

Environmental issues

Due to massive urbanisation in the area the environment now has changed and suffered due to the heavy pollution levels.
Removal of vegetation is one factor affecting the environment.
Pollution from stormwater drains and littering has also increased peak run off.
Nutrient enrichment from nearby parks and golf courses run into the soil during rain and this has increased algal levels.

River pollution

Area description

Geology
The Cooks River has a sandstone base and is a tidal river so the rises and falls over the rocks exposing them to the environment. The constant tidal and storm water flow makes the rivers banks very muddy and makes the water very muddy. The sandstone rocks are broken up into fairly large pieces.

Topography
The river is low and shallow so it prone to flooding. Humans have built stone walls to try prevent the flooding.

Plant and animal life
There is a some concentrations of mangroves, grass and small along the river. I saw a few birds, mainly ducks as well as crabs oysters and a rat.

Human activity
The river has been heavily affected due to much human activity near the river. The construction of bridges and paths have allowed increased access to the river and this has massively increased the amount of litter. The rive runs through some very urbanised areas which have had commercial and industrial business nearby dump litter into the water. Recent council management has began some clean up of the river.

Cooks River investigation introduction

I chose to conduct research and investigate the Cooks River as my local environment. The main areas I chose to investigate is the geology, topography, plant and animal life and human activity in the Cooks River and see how it has affected the river.
